I DREAM OF A HAMBURGER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I lie in bed,<\/strong> a tall, skinny girl of 10 years old, powerless and puny. Since I didn’t feel well, I stayed in<\/p>\n\n

my room. Excused from answering Daddy’s calls, \u201cHey, get us another beer.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Sounds of Mama<\/strong>, Daddy, and his drinking buddies drifted in from the living room.<\/p>\n\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I didn’t like to lay in bed,<\/strong> but at least I wasn’t Daddy’s little waitress for the men with groping hands. I<\/p>\n\n

was safe in bed, and hungry. Not up to par, but hardly ever so sick I didn’t want to eat. I had dreams<\/p>\n\n

of a big, fat, juicy hamburger, with ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, lettuce, and tomato. Better yet, on a<\/p>\n\n

toasted bun.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Mama fed us<\/strong>, and always managed, with her small food budget, to keep her family from<\/p>\n\n

going hungry. We survived on beans, macaroni, and brown bananas. With an occasional pork chop or a<\/p>\n\n

burger. A neighbor who worked in a grocery store kept us supplied with outdated bananas. For special<\/p>\n\n

treats, Mama made the most delicious banana bread, and home-made pies with those spotted bananas.<\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Daddy never went hungry.<\/strong> He made Mama cook for him every night. Around 2:30 am., after the bars<\/p>\n\n

closed, he’d drag in and order Mama to get out of bed and cook a T-bone, or a Porterhouse. The aroma<\/p>\n\n

of steak and mushrooms rolled into our room. The only thing we kids ever got was a whiff to savor.<\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Daddy worked hard<\/strong> through the week and needed his nourishment, so the steak was only for him. I’d<\/p>\n\n

never sampled his delicacy, but I longed for a big fat, juicy hamburger.<\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The sound of someone<\/strong> coming into my bedroom startled me out of my daydreams. A man peeked<\/p>\n\n

around the curtain. Oh, no, \"\"not another one of Daddy’s drunken friends to fear. He came closer, but not<\/p>\n\n

too close. He acted friendly but in a rather genuine way.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cHi kiddo,\u201d he said. \u201cAre you flaked out in here? Or are you still movable?\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI’m OK,\u201d I managed to whisper, grateful he wasn’t trying to touch me.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cDo you need anything?\u201d He asked.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cNo, I’m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cDon’t worry,\u201d he said, \u201cI’m not going to hurt you. I wanted to make sure you’re alright and find out if<\/p>\n\n

you’re thirsty, or hungry?\u201d<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWell, I squeaked, \u201cI’d like a hamburger with the works.\u201d Dork, now where do you think he’s going to<\/p>\n\n

get a hamburger?<\/p>\n\n

\u201cA hamburger?\u201d He laughed. \u201cI thought you were sick?\u201d<\/p>\n\n

He turned and left the room.<\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I must have dozed<\/strong> off for a few minutes when someone surprised me and pulled back the curtain. The<\/p>\n\n

polite man from earlier had returned. A Divine fragrance filled the room, coming from a bag he carried.<\/p>\n\n

He walked over next to my bed, \u201cHere,\u201d he smiled, \u201cspecial made, just for you.\u201d He handed the brown<\/p>\n\n

sack to me, turned, and hurried out of my bedroom.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I tore open the bag<\/strong> and pulled out a huge hamburger. Super thick beef, resting between a freshly toasted<\/p>\n\n

bun. Melted yellow cheese ran out the sides of the still-warm burger. Mustard, ketchup, relish, lettuce,<\/p>\n\n

tomato, and a thin slice of white onion rested on top of the meaty ground beef. Unbelievably juicy. My<\/p>\n\n

mouth barely fit around the burger, but I managed, and it tasted scrumptious. Eating was messy, but<\/p>\n\n

flavorful, and so worth all the drips. Daddy’s T-bone couldn’t compare to the Grilled Giant.<\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Honestly, the most awesome hamburger I ever had<\/strong>, even to this day, many years later. But, more<\/p>\n\n

importantly, the man who came into my room with no intentions of harming me, touched my soul. He<\/p>\n\n

wanted to do something to help a lonely, sick, child. He left his drinking friends\u2014and he didn’t grab a<\/p>\n\n

quick McDonald’s kiddie meal\u2014he drove to the nearest restaurant, waited while they cooked his order,<\/p>\n\n

and hand-delivered it back to me.<\/p>\n\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I don’t remember his nam<\/strong>e, but I will never forget his kindness. \u201cThank you, whoever you are. You<\/p>\n\n

made an impact in the life of one sad little girl. To this day, whenever I eat a hamburger, memories<\/p>\n\n

flood back of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
